Conrad Armstrong is a multi disciplinary artist from London who uses visual, sound, word, sculpture and installation in his practice. He is currently working on a body of work called PROGRESS which asks the question ‘what is Progress when the rocking horse is in constant motion but makes no Progress’.
Conrad is a founder of the Vicious Collective – an artist’s group that responds creatively to death, sex and politics using satire and magic.
Conrad has been mentored by renowned British artist Maggi Hambling CBE since he was 18. He also dropped out of Central Saint Martins and attended The Princes Drawing School in Shoreditch. Conrad’s first solo exhibition was in a pop-up gallery on Platform One of Wandsworth Common Station in 2009, he then went on to do 2 exhibitions in quick succession with Jelly Green Called ‘City and Field’ of rural Suffolk landscapes and London cityscapes at the Peter Pears Gallery in Aldeburgh, Suffolk and the Shoreditch Studio’s in London. 2015 saw Conrad take on a his most ambitious exhibition to date with a 3 room solo exhibition INTO THE FOREST, in Kachette, Shoreditch, addressing the spirit of the ‘Tree’ and the human response to the natural world in the 21st century. Jake Chapman described Conrad as “one of the most exciting emerging arists in London, morphing images of bucolic beauty together with a disturbed dystopian vision”. His mentor Maggi Hambling CBE described his work as “poetic and tactile”.
Conrad likes to work ‘en plein air’ with intensive studies directly from his subjects – rooting his work firmly within ‘Life’ and ‘Truth’ before taking them back to the studio.
His current studio is in Hackney Wick, London.
