Opened in July 2015, Unit G Gallery’s mission is to represent and showcase East London’s fine art scene – whether the artists work from Dalston, Stoke Newington, Clapton, Bow, Limehouse, Haggerston, Homerton, Hackney Wick, Stratford, Leyton or Leytonstone. Actually, this could be anywhere within the four ‘Olympic Boroughs’ of Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham and Walhamstow, and cover any form of fine art, by which we mean authentic work intended as ‘art for art’s sake’ without function. By promoting and selling their best work both locally and globally, we do our bit to help and sustain the multitude of emerging and established artists working in this part of the city. Within these parameters, we curate a diverse range of art genres across a mid-range price level. Each year we work with Hackney WickED Open Studios and Hackney Wick and Fish Island artists to run the Hackney WickED Art Prize.
The gallery team travels East London’s artists’ open studios and special events, and put up exhibitions every month.
The Gallery makes its curatorial judgments meaningful by bringing forward fresh emerging artists, as well as those who are at least already established locally.
The gallery sells artworks from its space in Hackney as well as online. The work will be certified by the artist and can be collected from them here.
Our operating company, Unit G London Limited, has a mission that includes supporting artists working in East London, by generating much of its income from trading, and by reinvesting surpluses to fulfil its mission; the company is also a long-standing member of the innovative local Economy of Hours (ECHO) time-banking system and the gallery has hosted their events.
“Every age, every nationality, every mood gets connected when it comes to creativity, and we give that energy a new space to spread!”
– Lisa-Marie Scheller, 2015
